Ministers of health from G20 countries are meeting this week in Rio de Janeiro. The meeting is expected to finalize a consensus among nations to be presented at the leaders’ summit, which will take place on November 18 and 19 in the city.
In an interview with the press on Tuesday (29), Brazil’s Minister of Health, Nísia Trindade, said that the G20’s greatest contribution to global health would be supporting the creation of a coalition for local and regional production of vaccines and medicines in countries and regions that face difficulties accessing these immunizations.
“This will be unprecedented. We have been working to reduce inequalities between countries and increase access. This is the main measure we hope will be approved. It is not possible to continue with the dependency that became evident during the COVID-19 pandemic, when many countries took a very long time to administer the first vaccine dose,” Nísia said.
The Minister of Health also stated that Brazil will advocate for expanding the digital health strategy, implementing measures to mitigate the effects of climate change, and creating an instrument to address future pandemics.
The country also wants to share the experience of the Health with Science platform, which aims to combat misinformation on health-related topics.
